Jesuitas Boquerón | Parish San José de las Petacas
The action of the Society of Jesus today focuses on accompanying and promoting the life and dignity of the communities, being servants of the life of the mountain. Accompanying, together with the State and peasant organizations, the struggle to stay in their territories, the work for a sustainable future and the care of the common home and its cultural traditions. The parish of San José de las Petacas is located in the Copo department of the province of Santiago del Estero in the north of Argentina in the region called Parque Chaqueño americano. This region consists of a semi-arid native forest with few but important alluvial rivers, with a marked seasonality in rainfall and a great biodiversity. It is the second largest area of forests in South America. In the midst of great distances between communities, the poor condition of roads, the lack of means of communication, the scarcity of water for human consumption and productive uses and the absence of electricity, live small communities formed by peasants and native peoples. Communities that live in communion with mother earth, the mountain and its creatures. Communities with a great sense of solidarity and fraternal, with a deep faith and a great spirit of work.
